Do you have any cracks in your drywall? Sounds like a quick inexpensive fix. Or is it?
We were called to do a simple drywall repair. The drywall that covered the center roof beam on a vaulted ceiling was cracking. The Client mentioned that the crack has been getting worse recently and in fact, it is making noises. Recently they heard a loud popping sound.
When we got to the house we noticed that there was a distinct belly where the drywall was cracking. Now our curiosity was perked, and our team silently began to wonder (WT.....) is going on here.
We asked our client if we could remove some drywall to expose the wood beam.
What we found is a homeowner's worst nightmare. Termites!!!!
The termites had destroyed and weakened the main roof beam. This is the part of the house that holds the roof over your head. If it breaks, well let's just say you don't want to be binge watching Netflix under that roof.
The Bad News is that we found the termites. The Good News is that we can make the repair! We immediately installed temporary support and had our engineer provide a drawing with the proper repair. Our team starts the project tomorrow.
Please don't always assume that a drywall crack is just a cosmetic repair. If you have doubts, call an expert to determine if the crack is a symptom of a bigger issue.
